Road safety

Teaching someone to drive can be an overwhelming experience. Navigating the requirements of the Graduated Licencing Scheme, finding time to practise driving and recording the details in the log book correctly can easily become the focus rather than forming good driving habits. The free Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshops are designed to empower supervisor drivers so they feel confident in the process.

Council has partnered with Transport for NSW to provide FREE online information sessions to parents and guardians teaching someone how to drive. The sessions offer practical advice and information to parents, carers and supervisors of learner drivers completing the Graduated Licensing Scheme and aim to make learning to drive a positive experience.

School zones operate from 8am to 9:30am and 2:30pm to 4pm on all school days, including pupil free days. Motorists are required to drive at no more than 40km/h through school zone times. Take extra care when driving and parking around school zones.

Free Cuppa for the Driver is an initiative aimed at reducing driver-fatigue-related crashes across NSW. The scheme is administered by a group of Road Safety Officers who engage with local cafes and other coffee providers to promote and deliver the scheme. All free cuppas are generously provided by established businesses who also want to see a reduction in our road toll.

The program runs each year from 1 March to 31 May.

Plan B is state-wide initiative delivered in conjunction with licensed venues, pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants each December, that asks patrons to think about and plan an alternative to driving home after a night out.

In the western region, there were 348 casualty crashes where alcohol was a contributing factor in the five year period between 2014 and 2018. This resulted in 36 people killed and 184 seriously injured.

Council, together with Transport for NSW is running the 'Spot Joe Rider' motorcycle safety campaign from 9 to 13 October 2023.

Joe Rider aims to reduce the occurrence of SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) crashes and encourages drivers and their passengers to spot 'Joe Rider' and enter a competition. We want all road users to look out for and notice motorcycle riders.
